Why Use Edulink?

One of the hardest decisions you will have to make about your studies is where to pursue them. Which institution is best for you? Which institution can you afford? Which country can you afford? Your family and friends may be able to help but making the final decision and applying to an institution can be difficult if you are overseas. This is why many students get help from an education agent like Edulink.

BENEFITS OF USING EDULINK:
  • WE WILL HELP YOU SORT THROUGH YOUR OPTIONS: We can give you a lot of information about the various universities in the UK, USA, Canada, South Africa and Australia. After discussing what kind of institution you are looking for, we will help you sort through your options to find the right institution and course for you.

  • WE HAVE EXPERT KNOWLEDGE: We have excellent knowledge of the international education sector and can provide you with all the information you need about the application process and what studying in the UK, Canada, USA, South Africa and Australia is really like.

  • WE CAN ASSIST WITH THE APPLICATION PROCESS: We will help you to complete the application forms and will deal directly with the institution on your behalf, which will take some of the work out of the application process for you.
  • WE ARE A LINK BETWEEN STUDENTS AND UNIVERSITIES. By using Edulink as an education agent, students stand higher chances of getting accepted into the Universities they chose because we have a contractual agreement with the best Universities in the world.
  • HELP WITH THE VISA APPLICATION PROCESS. Most people will find it hard to get a visa and/or go through the entire process on their own. It is therefore advisable to have an expert in this area to help guide students to the right direction and avoid any errors that could lead to the denial of a visa.

Qualified education agents can make the application process a lot smoother and easier, so it is a great option to use one if you are unsure about applying at a University abroad. The main thing to remember when using an education agent is to keep your needs in mind and make sure that they are being considered and met by us. We definitely put all our students first.

Winchester University

The University of Winchester is situated within the historic medieval Cathedral city of Winchester in Hampshire, central southern England. A range of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional development programs are available.
Colleges which form the University of Winchester were established in 1840, and it combines this heritage with innovative learning and teaching. It was awarded full University status by the Privacy Council in 2005.

Ranking

The University is ranked among the top five universities in the South East of England and top 25 Universities in England for overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2013.
In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 75% of the University’s research submitted was considered internationally recognized, with some research achieving the highest grade possible (4*) and a rating of “quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigor".

Facilities

Libraries

The Martial Rose Library houses over 200,000 volumes relating to every course at the uni. If the book you want isn't there (which with just 200,000 volumes, chances are some won't be as you progress through your studies), you can request a copy through inter-library loans for a small charge.
The library also has 300 study spaces and 150 computer spaces which are linked to the University's network.

IT and Computing

There are more than 400 computers available to you. With the 150 in the library most of the rest are in the dedicated IT Centres.
As well as computers, the uni offers continual training to students on computer and software use. You can also use a range of reprographic and stationary services and hire out various pieces of audio-visual equipment and take part in training to use the video editing suites.

Accommodation

Main Building
The University offers catered and self-catering accommodation on campus and University Managed Housing in the city - all of which are located within walking distance of the University. A big bonus at Winchester is the fact that ALL rooms in student housing have FREE internet access.

Welfare

The University Student Center
The University has a learning support service to help with more academic issues and a personal support service for non-academic issues.
The personal support service includes a confidential counseling service, a welfare team offering information and advice and help and assistance with money matters and child care matters. Due to the high proportion of mature students the nursery and half term activity sessions held at the uni are very useful services to have!

Healthcare

When you arrive in Winchester it's advisable to register with a GP so you can get the services of a medical doctor when you need one. The university does have a medical centre with this service but does have a nurse available daily. Just make an appointment and you can see her in the clinic in St James’ Hall Room 11.
Something different about Winchester is that the clinic room them offers a range of complementary therapies on some weekday afternoons. If you think this could help you could have sessions of aromatherapy or massages.

Transport

Whilst at university in Winchester you're unlikely to need much transport getting to and from the uni if you live in student accommodation. The main halls are within walking distance of the other academic and service buildings and are only 10 minute walk from the city center.
Nationally, transport links are good, with trains running in to Waterloo station in London and many National Express coaches stop at Winchester on route all over the UK.

Careers service

The careers service will offer you a range of advice, information and tips on search for and applying for a jobs, further study, overseas and volunteering opportunities. You'll be able to make use of the service for up to 2 years after you graduate too.

Part-time jobs

Unlike a few universities, Winchester is happy for you to work part-time while you study here (so long as it doesn't interfere with your studying).
The careers service put up a lot of adverts for part time work on the JobShop website - both at the uni and in the wider area. You'll need your IT login and password to access the jobs, so don't forget them. The careers service will always have a paper copy of any advert for you to look at should you prefer that. Just pop in and asks them about it.

Religious facilities

The university has a Chapel for Christian Worship and a Muslim prayer room.
No other groups are directly catered for on campus, though a Chaplain is there to offer help to all faiths, especially in finding places of worship within the community. The University has student groups for most religions and for those not having communities or places of worship within Winchester itself, near by Southampton usually does.

University Life in the UK

1. Check if you need to register
Some foreign nationals are required to register with the police within seven days of landing in the UK. You'll need your passport, two passport pictures, and £34 in cash.
2. Buy a coat
This might seem inane but as they say, the only thing predictable about British weather is it's unpredictability. Another way to combat the chill is to burn any shorts or sunglasses you've brought and warm your hands over the resulting fire...lol
3. Start an account
It's useful to have a UK bank account to enable you to pay bills and rent quickly and easily. You can get a basic bank account which will not give you credit but will enable you to get money from ATMs and make payments. Compare what the different banks offer at www.bba.org.uk.
4. Join the international society
Your university and student union will help if you're experiencing difficulties with your course or life in the UK. Your best resource, though, is your international society, which will have specific experience and understanding of your needs. Most run orienteering courses and social events, which are a great way to meet people. Find them via your institution's website or student union.
5. Learn more English
The academic English you'll be required to use in assignments is quite advanced. Institutions offer a range of courses, from free lunchtime tutorials to residential pre-sessional courses that cost £200-£300 a week.
6. Stay healthy
If you get a snivel, you've probably been gripped by a favourite in Britain: the common cold. Get rest, fluids and vitamins. If symptoms get worse, consult your local doctor. All treatment on the National Health Service is free if you're studying in the UK for six months or more. Information and advice is also available at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk.
7. Stay in touch
Stay in touch with your family back home with a mobile plan that suites you right, social meadia and Skype. Skype has revolutionised international communication, offering free internet calls where you can speak to and wave at friends and family; download it at www.skype.com.
8. Don't be a victim
Generally, the UK is a safe and welcoming place for international students. Students can be a target for thieves though, so keep doors and windows locked if you go out; when you do, try to stay in groups and don't leave valuables on display.
You can call the emergency services on 999 free from any phone.
9. Get a job
Working part-time is a great way to earn cash and meet people. If you're from a country within the European Economic Area (EEA), you don't need permission to work in the UK. If you're from outside the EEA but on a full-time course of study, you can work up to 20 hours a week in term time and full-time during holidays.
10. Move around
Public transport in the UK is generally cheap and well-organised; student cards often get you a discount on buses. If you're in London, an Oyster card is essential. Black taxis can be hailed in the street; minicabs should be phoned to make sure they're legitimate. For travel around the UK, you can get a third of coach and train tickets with a student pass.

Pay close attention to these 10 basic survival steps for Uni. life in the UK and you will surely have yourself a splendid time.
